Picking the Right Background Removal Model

Remove.BG, Leonardo.ai OR Fluidfit RBG3

Fluidfit gives you three major background removal models:
Remove.BG, Leonardo.ai and RBG3.

They all cut out a subject cleanly, but each has its own strengths. Some keep every hair strand soft, some keep your image at full size, and some go after the whole object even when it's complex.

We ran all three on the same set of test images, from portraits and pets to glass bottles and bicycle wheels. Here's what each one does best, so you can pick the right model for your image.

Heads up: Remove.BG is being deprecated on/before 30 November 2026. Our recommendation is to choose out of other two models - Leonardo.ai gives you the same cutout quality in a lighter file, and RBG3 keeps your images at full size.

All three gave near-identical results

Remove.BG: the all-rounder

Remove.BG is the one to reach for when you want a natural-looking cutout at full quality.

  • Soft, natural edges. Hair, fur and feathers fade into the background the way they do in real life, instead of ending in a hard line.

  • Full resolution. Your cutout comes back at the same size as the image you uploaded.

  • Handles tricky lighting. Glass bottles and white-on-white shots came out clean, with transparency kept where it should be.

  • Stays on the main subject. Nearby props and background clutter stay out of the cutout.

Good to know: on objects with lots of very thin parts, like the spokes of a bicycle wheel, it focuses on the main body and can leave some of the thinnest pieces out.

Leonardo.ai: same great cutout, lighter file

Leonardo.ai matched Remove.BG's cutouts on every one of our test images, from curly hair to glass bottles. The difference is the size of what you get back.

  • Same edge quality. Hair, fur, feathers and transparency look the same as with Remove.BG.

  • Size. PNG output is capped at 10 megapixels.

  • Great for the web. Lighter files load faster in social posts, websites, previews and drafts.

Good to know: if you need a large cutout for print or big-screen use, pick Remove.BG or RBG3 so you keep the full size.

RBG3: full size, crisp edges, whole objects

RBG3 keeps your image at full resolution and draws sharp, defined edges. It's at its best on clean subjects and on complex objects you want kept whole.

  • Full resolution. Cutouts come back at your original image size.

  • Crisp, clean edges. Great for portraits, products and people on plain or white backgrounds.

  • Keeps complex objects whole. On a bicycle wheel, RBG3 kept the full rim and every spoke, where the other two kept mainly the hub.

Where to watch out:

  • Fine hair and fur. Edges are hard rather than soft, so loose strands, fluffy tails and wisps can look chunky or get trimmed.

  • Soft, see-through details. On a feather, it trimmed some of the delicate, translucent fibres.

  • Busy product scenes. On a dropper bottle styled with a leaf and a reflective dish, RBG3 pulled the props into the cutout too.

  • Extra objects. In a group shot of people on stools, it kept the people and left the stools out. Handy if you only want the people, less so if you want the full scene.

How each model did on our test images

All three handled clean portraits and plain backgrounds well. The differences showed up on hair, fur, glass and objects with thin parts.

Leonardo.ai cutouts came back smaller at times due to 10 MP limit on size. Remove.BG and RBG3 kept the original size every time.

See the difference

Here are the cutouts side by side, shown on a checkerboard so you can see exactly what each model kept.

Fluffy white dog

Watch the tail and ears: Remove.BG and Leonardo.ai keep the soft wisps, while RBG3 turns them chunkier.

Bicycle wheel and spokes

RBG3 keeps the full rim and every spoke. The other two keep mainly the hub.

Colourful feather

RBG3 trims some of the delicate fibres at the upper left.

Dropper bottle with props

RBG3 pulls the leaf and reflective dish into the cutout. The other two keep just the bottle.

A group of people on stools

RBG3 keeps the people and leaves the stools out.

Wind-blown hair

All three catch the flying hair. RBG3's outer strands come out a bit thinner and harder.

Pro tip

Not sure which one fits? Run the same image through two models and compare them side by side. Hair, fur and glass show the difference fastest.

Wrap-up

Go with Remove.BG for natural edges at full size (until 30 November 2026), Leonardo.ai for lighter files, and RBG3 for crisp, full-size cutouts of complex objects. Pick the one that fits your image, and the cutout takes care of itself.
